Happy Easter!

Happy Easter!  Hope you have a very lovely day!

First I want to show you what I won!  One of the blogs I follow is Grill Grrrl, Adventures of a Girl on the Grill.  This is the blog of Robyn Medlin Linders and her adventures with grilling healthy, simple, creative recipes.   If you like grilling and bbq, you will love the blog.  Anyway, she had a great giveaway for some Stubbs bbq stuff and I won!  Yay!  Stubbs BBQ sauce is SOOOO good! Can’t wait to use it and now that the snow is all melted, I think I may use it soon!  Thank  you so much Robyn and Mary Kate and Stubb’s Legendary Kitchen!

Yesterday I had a fun time at the STLMQG Sew-In.  First, we had a quilting lesson with Cindy Lammon.  It was a great lesson and I think we all learned so much!  Most people were practicing free motion quilting.  I am embarrased to admit, I needed practice with straight line quilting.  I’ve done free motion and boxes and things, but never straight lines.  I had never – in the four years I’ve had my Janome, used my walking foot or the funny metal bar that it comes with.  So I did.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

One of the things she mentioned was starting your sewing sessions with 15 to 20 minutes of free motion quilting practice and to practice one design at a time until you master it.  So, I am committing to practicing my free motion quilting for 15 minutes a day most days to see how I can improve.

After quilting practice, I worked on the next two Japanese blocks.

I didn’t get as much done in March as I’d like.  Watch out April!

Weekend Update: Quilting & Sewing!

My First Ever Quilt
This is the first quilt I ever made.  I had no idea what I was doing! I pieced the top, stitched in the ditch, and ended up with a super oversized twin quilt.  It got me hooked! I still have it but it’s not so pretty anymore because it has been loved so much!

Yesterday we went to Barnes and Noble.  We all love hanging out at the bookstore, having a coffee, and browsing through all the new books since the last time we we there.  Ours has the music section which is where Andrew hangs out.  He is all about music.  Sammy loves comics, graphic novels, and video game characters.  He is always done faster than the rest of us and ready to go.  Tom heads to the sci-fi/fantasy section.  He saw some really good books but has a few here at home he wants to finish before he gets anymore.  I head to the quilting, crafts, and art sections, and sometimes throw in cooking and history.  I have a hard time finding time to read fiction.  The last books I read were by John Connolly: The Book of Lost Things, The Gates, and the Infernals.  They were really good and entertaining.  The Gates and Infernals I think were meant for teens but I still enjoyed them.  Right now I have the book Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke.  I really like her writing… it’s kind of magic/supernatural meets Jane Austen.  Funny, spooky, mysterious, and clever.  Anyway, I hope to finish it…. it is HUGE.  It is amazing to me how many new quilt, sewing, and craft books there are every time we go!  And all the magazines out now! Wow!  I don’t end up buying any of them but I did subscribe this year to Modern Quilts Unlimited.  modern-quiltI got my issue Thursday and it is really good!  And there’s a quilter from the St. Louis Modern Quilt Guild in there this issue.  How cool!

I finished my pouch for the Sweet Pouch Swap.   The fabric is Sassy by Sandy Gervais.

zipper-pouch  I used fusible interfacing on the pieced rectangles and then quilted them so the bag has a nice firm feel to it.  My zipper turned out great and I made a fabric pull for it.

inside-betterI lined the inside with a bright blue aqua Kona to match the zipper.  Today I’m stuffing it with sweets and it is off to my swap partner in tomorrow’s mail!  I really love how it turned out!  I have a lot more Sassy squares cut so I think I might make some more!  I want one, too!  Do you like it?  I will create a tutorial when I make the next one and share it with you!

Today I am working to get my A Lovely Year of Finishes January project done!  I must have it finished by January 31st!  Better get to work!!

2012 Review and Goals for 2013

 Craft Buds

2012 has certainly been a year of learning and change and getting settled.

2012
We moved from Katy, Texas to St. Louis at the end of the summer in 2011, so it was our first holiday here and we were still settling in.

Untitled-2
We started 2012 in a panic.  Andrew had been sick and was getting sicker.  We didn’t know what was going on with him.  He got an infection in his leg, but it was a blessing in disguise, because it led us to finding out he had juvenile diabetes.  We ended up spending the first week of the year in the hospital where Andrew had surgery on his leg and had his blood sugar stabilized and Tom, Andrew and I went through Type 1 Diabetes education.  We are still learning – what makes his blood sugar go up – when he is stable – making sure he is consistent which is hard for a teenager.  And a big pain sometimes when you just want to have a snack and you have to deal with blood sugar and shots.  But he has been a trooper and is healthy again and doing very well.

We also home school and there is lots and lots of learning and time that go along with that, of course.   We have just voted and decided to switch to year round school – three months on and one month off -  instead of the traditional nine months on and three months off.  I think it will work really well for us and end the process of spending the first month of school on reviewing and getting back up to speed.   Andrew also plays guitar and takes lessons and Sammy will start piano lessons this year.  I really enjoy it and am grateful for the time I get with them.  They are a lot of fun and do really well.  There is a really great home school network here in St. Louis, as well.  We have been really blessed!

Sammy on a field trip to Union Station
I also got back to sewing.  I taught a beginning quilting class to some home school girls and it was so much fun.  One of the girls, age 12, after taking my Baby Doll Quilt class, bought supplies and made a real baby quilt to give as a gift!  How great is that?!

Baby-Doll-Quilt-thumbnail
In the spring I did a half-square triangle quilt with a modern back and participated in the Spring Blogger’s Quilt Festival over at Amy’s Creative Side.  I really loved making this quilt!

Over the summer I was so unorganized and really didn’t get my machine out.  I didn’t have a permanent place for it and it was pain.  I was unmotivated and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.  My things have now found a permanent place in our guest room and I have gotten busy!  I’ve done quilts and have moved into doing some bags now and designed my own.  I really have enjoyed working on them!  I’ve also been practicing and working to advance my piecing and free motion quilting.  For Christmas I got three great books: The Bag Making Bible by Lisa Lam, In the Studio with Angela Walters: Machine-Quilting Design Concepts* Add Movement, Contrast, Depth & More, and Modern Patchwork: 12 Quilts to Take You Beyond the Basics by Elizabeth Hartman.  I am looking forward to having a lot of fun with them!  I’ve been working on some designs that I’m really excited about and can’t want to get working on.

My long-term goal is to transform my hobby into a business.  To that end, my goal for this year consistency.  Consistency with writing, planning, learning, and creating.  To become a better writer and learn more about keeping a blog and an online store.  To learn more about planning and design and patterns.  To create more and become better at my craft.  To move toward my long-term goal.  Any tips and advice is very welcome and appreciated!

Overall, 2012 has been a good year and I’m looking forward to 2013!

Happy New Year!  I hope to hear from you and promise I will be diligent and consistent in answering every one of you!

Catching Up and Sloppy Joes

Sorry I’ve been absent!  Feel like I’ve had a lot of distractions lately and haven’t had a chance to sit down and blog.

Wednesday, I took the first of three classes to learn the embroidery on my new sewing machine.   It was fun and I was kind of glad I hadn’t messed around with the machine.  I learned a lot!  In class I did this:
Krista with Frame

I’ve played around with it a bit more and did these:
Embroidered Butterfly
Sew What's Cooking Tag
I have class tomorrow and am really looking forward to it!

Thursday, I taught a beginning quilting class to 3 mom’s and their daughters.  It went really well and they all did a great job!  We went a bit long but by the time everyone left they had: pieced the top, quilted the “sandwich, and sewed their binding to their quilt.   They only had to blind stitch the binding to the back of the quilt at home.

I had set up a table of an assortment of 3 1/2″ squares and backings, so each person got to design their own unique doll quilt.  It was really neat to see the different designs they each came up with!  I have another class this Friday with three 12-year-old girls.  I think it will be a lot of fun!

Today I spent time trying to get organized and get things cleaned up in my work area.  I wanted to get some sewing done but with the mess I had going on, I didn’t know where to start!

I did get this baby quilt all pinned and ready to quilt but I’m not sure what kind of quilting design I ought to do.  Stipple all over in brown?  Circles around the circle-y border and zig zagged along my zig zags?  I’d love to hear your thoughts on this – Please leave a comment!

Zig Zag Quilt

How should I machine quilt this? Suggestions, Please!

Well, that’s all I have for now.  I will try to be more consistent with my posting!  I still have some Japanese quilt blocks I’m typing instructions up for and some recipes coming.  I’ve also been finishing up a couple of quilt patterns to post.  Check back soon!  I’m plugging along!

I’ll leave you with my recipe for Homemade Sloppy Joes which we had for dinner.  They are really yummy and everyone loves them.  Hope you enjoy!

Pies & Quilt Progress

We have had a busy weekend and beginning of the week!  Friday (I think!) my mom confirmed when she can come visit from her place in New York, so we got her trip all set up.  I’m excited!  She will be coming in April 25th!

Then, Friday night, Tom’s mom & step dad came over for dinner and Tom cooked us dinner on the new grill.  It was REALLY good!  He did a great job – as always! I made some pies for dessert – a peach streusel and a blueberry lattice.

Here’s the recipe for the peach.  Blueberry to follow when it’s not so late!

Peach Streusel Pie

Ingredients

  • 8 medium peaches
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2/3 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter (Chopped into smaller pieces)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 single pie crust (prepared, in pie pan)

Directions

Step 1
Preheat oven to 425.
Step 2
Peel and pit the peaches. Slice into wedges. You need approximately 6 cups.
Step 3
In a large bowl, mix the peaches with the lemon juice then toss with sugar and salt. Let sit at room temperature 30 minutes or up to 8 hours. Transfer to a colander over the bowl to seperate the fruit from the juice.
Step 4
Over medium heat, boil the juices in a small non-stick pan, gently stirring, approximately 10 minutes or until syrup and reduced by 1/3-1/2.
Step 5
Toss the peaches with cornstarch and vanilla until cornstarch has dissolved. Stir into syrup mixture. Put mixture into prepared pie crust.
Step 6
Cover crust edges with foil and bake in 425 degree oven for 30-45 minutes until topping is golden brown and peaches are bubbling.

Japanese Quilt Block #24 Preview

Japanese Block #25 turned out kinda wonky but I know what I did wrong and I’ll post the right instructions!  I love the spiral block!  It’s so fun.  I might make more – but the right way!

Japanese Quilt Blocks #25

Saturday night, Tom’s dad came over and we watched Johnny English Reborn.  I love the Johnny English movies and Bean.  So funny!

Then Sunday, Dad came back over and Tom’s brother & sister in law and cousin Quincy came over for another barbecue.  Once again, Tom outdid himself and the food was amazing.  I made more pie – this time a lattice cherry and an apple streusel.

These recipes will follow as well. :)

I’ve also been getting ready for a quilt class I’m teaching on Thursday – a beginning quilting for Mom and Daughter – so I was making binding and doing prep.

Finally, today, we put down Old Blue.  As in our 2001 light blue Nissan Quest.  May she rest in peace  – she sure served us well and it showed!  We traded her in towards a beautiful Nissan Rogue.  Nothing fancy – a modest “crossover” – but it sure feels fancy and drives like a dream.  Super exciting.  And special thanks going out to Dad for his help.  On the way home Andrew kept saying “We got a new car, Mom!”  Followed by – wow, my first car (in 4 years) will be a Nissan Rogue! LOL.  Can’t wait to pick my mom up from the airport in our new ride!

Funny – but when we pulled into the driveway, I reached back to open the back door so I could reach around to the outside of my driver’s door to open it since the inside handle broke – and realized I don’t have to do that anymore!  LOL – should have seen the dealers face when I disclosed my list of things wrong with poor Old Blue. :)

The boys and I spent most of the day there with Tom on my speed dial for instant message and phone advice on and off all day! (Thank you, Honey!!!!)  We ended up with a good deal and a pretty little car!

Busy Again – 3 Quilts!

Well, I didn’t get my Japanese Blocks finished.  I think I’ll be working on those tonight. However, I sure have managed to keep myself busy!  And will be busy for a while with all the quilting!

Last night I really wanted to play with my new charm packs and have wanted to do a Half Square Triangle Quilt.  I used almost the whole pack of Vintage Modern and I think about half of Redwork Renaissance and got all my  1/2 square triangles sewn, pressed, trimmed, and up on my design board.  I can’t wait to start putting it all together.  Here’s a peek!  I LOVE it!

Half Square Triangle Peak

This Chocolate Zig Zag Quilt is ready to be quilted..  I thought about piecing the back but decided against it.  I’ve had this in my WIP pile for too long and want it done.

Zig Zag Top

I have this top finished now, too.  I’m almost done piecing the back and it will be all ready to quilt!

Quilty Progress

TGIF!  Yesterday I felt like I got some things done!

First, I spent time working on getting organized.  I got my scraps organized by color in a big basket so I can continue working on my Japanese Blocks and my string quilt as well as add to it as I go.  I also pressed and folded some of my fabric.  I threaded and tested a machine I had the timing set on that I plan to use in my class and it worked great.

I made a pin cushion / binding clips jar.  I like it ok but I might redo it.

Pin Cushion Jar

I finished my fish pillow.  I was originally going to do a pillow cover but decided to just make it a pillow.  What I love, too, is that the background and back of the pillow used to be a pair of my husbands Dockers!  The fish and border are from a charm pack I had.  The fish are from  the book Scandinavian Stitches: 21 Playful Projects with Seasonal Flair by Kajsa Wikman.  I changed the wording, though.  Mine says “fish” in Scots Gaelic instead of her “haddock” in Finish.  I love this pillow!

Fish PillowFish Pillow Back

I finished Tom’s pillow that I started a LONG time ago!Tom's Cardinal PillowTom's Cardinal Pillow Back

I also finished sewing the rows together -all but the last one  for my Japanese Block Quilt.

On today’s agenda, besides a trip to the library and grocery store, I plan to make the 4 blocks I need to finish the final row on my Japanese Blocks quilt and add the final sashing (I’ll post them in the tutorial section this weekend.) and I plan to add the final sashing on my zig-zag baby quilt top.

Well, I’d better get moving!  I hope you have a lovely Friday!

Works in Progress

Well, I’ve been busy! I should be doing some housework – (my floor really needs mopped!) and  I was determined to get up and get all my chores done right away this morning.  However, my sewing machine kept calling to me and  I couldn’t resist!

First, I wanted to try out the Loopy Flower tutorial on Oh! Fransson, but I didn’t want to just waste fabric and batting so I decided to make some potholders.  I think they turned out pretty cute but I need a little more practice on the flower!

I have this quilt top in progress featuring blocks of Moda Eden.  It is one of my UFO’s and I started it a while ago.  I think it looks sweet – but maybe too busy?    What do you think?
