A New Bag & A Giveaway Winner

Sorry I have been scarce.  Truth is – the next month is going to be super busy for us and I will post whenever I can.  We have some big things that have come up and I can’t share them all yet – but I hope to soon!

I made a bag for my mother-in-law for Mother’s Day.  It is the Amanda’s Knitting Bag pattern by the sometimes crafter but I didn’t stitch the front needle pocket so it’s a big pocket-y tote.  I love how it turned out.  I used home dec fabrics and interfacing so it’s nice and sturdy.

I made something for my mom, too, but can’t share it until after Monday.  My mom is coming for a 10-day visit from New York.  Can’t wait!

I’m behind this week on the free motion quilting for the Japanese Block of the Month.  I’ll be adding that Tuesday along with the next block. Sorry about that!

Well…. onto the winner of this month’s giveaway! The prize is this great book, floss, a hoop, and needles to get your started!

Yum:

I love asparagus.  Love love love it.  If you make asparagus, you know you bend asparagus and let it naturally snap.  What you end up with are lovely ripe stalks as well as a pile of tougher ends.  Most of the time, this adds up to quite a little bit of asparagus and I can’t stand to waste it, so…… pesto!  I trim off the very ends of those pieces and use what remains for pesto.  You roast it and then grind it up … so you get all the flavor and don’t notice any toughness!

Roasted Asparagus Pesto
Like asparagus? Like pesto? You will LOVE this!

Author:

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. asparagus
  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • ½ cup nuts your choice
  • ½ cup olive oil + more for roasting
  • ½ cup parmesan

Instructions
  1. Clean asparagus and cut into smallish pieces. Toss with a couple tablespoons of olive oil and bake until softened and beginning to brown.
  2. Place cooked asparagus, garlic, and nuts in food processor and pulse until chunky and mixed. Drizzle olive oil and pulse until blended. Add parmesan and pulse one or two more times.
  3. Toss with cooked pasta or put a spoonful into soup.

Bacon Cheeseburger Quesadillas & April 2013 Giveaway

Sorry I’ve been quiet – and I’m a day late with my giveaway.  I am through my 3rd day of doing the P90X workout and I was really wiped out Tuesday and Wednesday!  So far so good though!  I’ve been eating really healthy and limiting my carbs and doing the workouts first thing in the morning.  I have to say, I have been feeling so much better and getting so much more done!

Today for lunch I made Rachel Ray’s Bacon Cheeseburger Quesadillas.  They were REALLY good!  The kids loved them!  I made them with flour tortillas for the kids.

bacon-cheese-flour

And for mine I used corn tortillas as they half the carbs of the flour tortillas. bacon-cheeseburger-quesadil

I think I will be making them again this weekend.  I only used about 1/4 a pack of bacon, 1/2 of the amount she called for, and I think it was plenty.  SOOOO good!

Well, onto the giveaway!

I’m still cleaning out fabric so this month I have a big scrap bag of fabric.  Most of it is at least 1/4 yard.  Some is more than 1/4 yard.  So, total there is probably at least 4 1/2 yards of fabric.

This Week’s Happenings… plus Blog Hops, Giveaways, Patterns, & Quilt Alongs

keysI’ve been doing pretty well with staying on schedule, eating good, and getting things done.  Friday I had a little monkey wrench thrown in when I couldn’t find my keys.  I’m usually the one in my house that knows where things are and says “If you put ________ in the same place all the time, you’d always know where ______________ is.”  (Blush!)  But this time it was me.  We are supposed to be heading to the grocery store and library.  Almost an hour and a half later I resorted to looking through the trash I had taken out to the garage – and there they were!  I was so thankful.  Especially since it was the first bag I had put out since trash pickup!

This week we are busy with school, of course.   I’m going to start working out again, doing P90X.  I’m trying to psych myself up!  Once I get started, I keep going.  The key for me is to lay out my workout clothes, grab a cup of coffee, and get started before I have time to wake up or think much or talk myself out of it!

Sewing and quilting wise:

I have 2 paper pieced blocks I’m helping Elisabetta with and I’ll be posting tutorials for them.

I’ve decided I want to make a Dr. Who wall hanging instead of a Dr. Who knit bag – so that will be an on going project.  There are just too many blocks that I want to make – so it has to be bigger. :)   However, I still want a knitting bag, so I’m going to pick out some pretty pretty fabric and make one up for myself.

I am working on my Modern She Made project.  Details to follow.  :)

I’m working on quilting my Moda Eden quilt.  Too late for March’s Year of Lovely Finishes – but I will finish it for April for sure.

That’s all I know for know – and that is plenty to keep me busy!

This Week’s Happenings… plus Blog Hops, Giveaways & Quilt-Alongs

It is a cold day here and snow is everywhere!  This is definitely the most snow we have had since we moved here – and the most my kids have ever seen!  The roads were plowed yesterday, though, and Tom said they weren’t too bad on his way into work, thankfully!

snow2

This week should be pretty laid back.  I have things to get done but besides music lessons and a trip to the library, our schedule is pretty clear.

Today I have to work on my block for tomorrow’s Modern Japanese Block of the Month.  Here’s a coloring/design page for you.

I have lots to do for school this week.  We are working on the 1450-1750 A.D. period using the Barron’s AP World History as our guide and adding Geography, map work, videos, art & music history and supplemental fun materials, Chemistry + experiments from Janice Van Cleve’s A+ Projects in Chemistry. Andrew is working on Pre-Algebra and Sammy has been really enjoying Geometry.  And of course, spelling, grammar, and writing.  We have also been doing Spanish using Rosetta Stone.  We will be starting pencil drawing for art later this week, too, which I am really looking forward to!

Tonight I’m making Chicken Fried Steak and Mashed Potatoes.  It’s been a long while since we have had that since it’s not the healthiest meal in the world – but it sounds so good.  I’ll post a recipe later this week!

I’m also working on my second and better Dr. Who Tardis block from the tutorial by Jennifer Ofenstein over at Fandominstitches.

I also need to stalk my partner for the Modern She Made Swap.  I have to make something with at least one star in it!  I have some ideas but not sure yet.

This weekend I’m going to STLMQG Sew In Saturday.  I need to figure out what I’m going to work on.

Finally, I’ve been practicing knitting at night.  I found a knit block of the month and thought it would be a great way to practice different stitches and end up with an afghan.  Unfortunately, the one I started with – looks like they didn’t ever finish it.  So, I’ll be looking around to find other blocks or just making up my own!  Here’s what I have done so far.

This block is The Honeycomb Cable Afghan Square by Fiona Robertson-Clarke.  It was a fun block to do.

Giveaway – March 2013 Winner

Hello!

Hope you have been having a good week! Today I gave Barb her last quilting lesson.  She did really great!  Her placemats just need the back of the binding hand stitched on.  When she finishes I will post a photo.  We had a lot of fun and she took me out to St. Louis Bread Company (Panera) for lunch after.  I had the best salad there!  It was called Fuji Apple Chicken.  It had chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pecans, Gorgonzola, apple chips & white balsamic apple vinaigrette.  It was so so good!  I wish I had some more!  Tomorrow I’m going to work on my Covert Robin swap gift and try to get it done!  I have a fun gift in mind and can’t to work on it!

Well, on to the giveaway!

march-2013

This month was this lot of civil war-y type prints.  Thank you so much for participating!  It was great to hear all the shopping suggestions!  I love to hear from you and am trying to get back to everyone who commented.

This month’s winner was Daphne who said:

I really don’t have a favorite. Joann’s is the closest so it is my ‘go to’ store. I like Keepsake Quilting but love fabric and any store that takes PayPal will work for me!

Congratulations, Daphne, and thanks so much everyone.  My next giveaway will begin on April 10th!

That’s all I have for tonight.

Take care!

Beat the Winter Blues Quilter’s Blog Hop Party Fabric Giveaway Winner

First, I want to thank everyone who participated in my giveaway and a special thanks to those who follow.  I really appreciate you and can’t tell you how exciting it is to see new comments and follows!  I also want to thank Michelle at Quilting Gallery for hosting this fun Blog Hop Party Giveaway!

There were some great, great tips.  If you are a new quilter, you can find a lot of good advice here – and if you aren’t a newbie, there were some really good reminders in there!

A note on the frixion pens that have been showing up in quilt stores and that people have been using.  Moni over at The Quilting Climber did a great post evaluating Frixion pens and reappearing ink!  If you use these, you really might want to check it out.’

My giveaway was for 6 fat quarters of Timber & Leaf fabric by Sara Watts for Hawthorne Threads.

timber-&-leaf

And, the winner was #90, Jessica from A Bushel and A Peck.  Her tip was:

Use the seam ripper, don’t say it will be fine, when it will only take a few extra minutes to rip it out and redo it so its right. Your quilt will be much better off in the end.
Jessica recently posted…Lincoln’s Puff QuiltMy Profile

Thanks again for everyone who participated.  Don’t forget to check out my March giveaway which ends on March 20th!

Hope you have a great weekend!  Anyone going to the Thimble and Thread Quilt Expo at Queeny Park in St. Louis this weekend?  Would love to say hello!

Hope you have a great weekend!

Giveaway – March 2013

This weeks giveaway is a bit of a mish-mash of fabrics.  First, there is a Moda Charm Pack spread out there in the center.  I wish I could tell you what it was called!  I spent forever looking for it on line but came up with nothing.  If YOU know, I would so appreciate finding out after all that searching! Plus…. lots of other classic/civil war type fabrics.

march-2013

So:
1 Moda charm pack
4 fat quarters of Moda Libertyville red stars
approximately 1/2 yard of Peddler’s Village RJR fabrics
a piece of Civil War by Judie Rothermel for Marcus Brothers
1 fat quarter of burgundy quilt shop fabric with gold and blue stars
1/4 yard of a green batik
1/2 yard of Mums the Word by Debbie Mumm for SSI
1/2 yard (almost) of navy blue with with flowers
1/2 yard (almost) dark green print fabric
plus scraps of burgundy, the flag, and some mustard and burnt orange scrap strips.

All in all it’s a good amount of fabric for someone who likes these classic and civil war-y fabrics.  I hate to keep passing over them in a drawer when someone out there might really love them.

For your chance to win, leave a blog post below and tell me what is your favorite store for quilt fabric – live or online.  For extra chances, follow the prompts on the promosimple widget.

Winner(s)! – Sew What’s Cooking?’s February 2013 Giveaway

This week has been pretty good.  Last week I was approached in Joann Fabrics to teach quilting at their store after someone saw my Cathedral Windows bag and found out I made it.  How cool is that?  So I’m going to give it a go!  I’ll be doing some quilting and sewing with adults and kids beginning in May.

I also won the book, We Love Color, from Mad About Patchwork (thank you Pam!) and Riley Blake Cotton Shuffle fabric from Mommy’s Nap Time (thank you Emily!).  I couldn’t believe it!   I also won a raffle at the STLMQG meeting (I did buy 4 tickets :) ).

In light of that, I decided to pick 3 winners for this giveaway!  The first winner will get their choice of the 3 books, the second winner gets their choice of the remaining 2 books, and the 3rd will get the remaining book.

2012 Monthly Giveaway – August Winner!

I have had the hardest time getting motivated, organized and getting things done this summer.  I know part of it is the heat wave we have had.  Ugh.  But school is right around the corner and we home school so it is time for me to really get on the ball!  I have a number of things to post about, so I will get busy getting them out there beginning tomorrow with the September giveaway post.

There were 70 lovely comments.  Thank you so much for stopping by and for those who are following, a special thanks.  And, fyi, if you listed your blog – I’ve visited and returned the favor by signing up for rss feed to yours!  I’ve also tried to e-mail everyone who posted – but if I missed anyone, I apologize.  I loved all the book suggestions and will be checking them out!

Now…. without further ado….. the winner of the August giveaway!

Comment #24 was from Lisa Cox who said:

I don’t really have a favorite book. I have some favorite authors and will read anything that they write. I’ve read some pretty good books recently too. I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward, the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, the Carpathians series by Christine Feehan, and the In Death series by JD Robb.

Thanks, Lisa, for sharing & following!  I have also sent you a separate e-mail.  Lisa wins the big grab bag of kid & critter prints as well as the issue of Quilt It – For Kids.

Thanks for participating and be sure to stop back tomorrow and enter September’s giveaway!

Have a great day!

2012 Monthly Giveaway – August

For this month’s giveaway, I’m digging into my stash for a big grab bag of kid & critter prints.  Some are smaller pieces, some are 1/4-yards, some 1/2 yards.  Note – there are a lot of cat fabrics due to the collection I ended up with after making my kitty loving son’s quilt.  There are also quite a few not shown – bees, flowers, more critter, ABC-123.  Anyway – it’s a good size bag with a good assortment of kid friendly prints!  Along with that I have an older special issue of Quilt It – For Kids.  All the patterns are still attached inside and it’s packed with kid & baby quilts to give you loads of ideas!

2012 Monthly Giveaway – July: Winner!

The heat wave has really slowed me down.  Today it is supposed to be 105!  Supposedly rain is in the forecast for tomorrow and a week of 90′s and high 80′s.  We hope! But as Tom said this morning  – “I’ll believe it when I see it!”

Well, to get to the point…… There were 41 comments for July’s giveaway: a pack of 5″ square cuts (28 pieces) by Studio e Fabrics called Pungkin Peers, a really cute Halloween pack, and A Treasury of Scrap Quilts by Nancy J. Martin.

And the winner is number 10, Kate Brown whose favorite ice cream is black raspberry.  Thanks to everyone who left a comment and/or followed!  Check back tomorrow with August’s Giveaway!
