Welcome to my new weekly feature, Block of the Week. In my goal to improve my quilt skills this year, I thought one good way would be to try as many different blocks and techniques as I can, and I will share them with you. I will also include links to similar blocks and tutorials.
This weeks block is a Bargello Block. I’m getting caught up on my Something New Sampler blocks from The Cute Life and this was Block 1.
I’m using Breath of Avignon and I’m not exactly sure which yellow this is, but it is Kona.
I followed the tutorial and cut:
yellow – 8.5″ x 12″
white #1 – 4.25″ x 12″
blue – 2″ x 12″
white #2 – 1″ x 12″
red – 1.75″ x 12″
Next, I sewed my strips together in my desired color order.
When all my strips were sewed together, I carefully pressed all my seams open. Square up if necessary.
Next, I sewed my two edges together to create a tube. I’m sorry – I missed taking a photo of the tube before I cut it!
Making sure your tube lies nice and flat, you will cut into strips. I cut:
three 1″ strips, one 1.25″ strip, one 1.5″ strip, and three 2″ strips
Arrange the tubes to make a bargello pattern. When you like your arrangement, clip at the top of your tube and lay strips flat.
Sew strips together. Press seams open. And, there you have it!
This was a nice easy block to make. Great for using up scrap strips you have!

I just saw that somewhere else. They made it seem so easy to do. I think I’ll have to give it a try too.
